Chant “Juseige”: Shorter than the Heart Sutra

The Heart Sutra is the most popular sutra in Japan.

There are many reasons for its popularity, but the main reason is its 262 kanji characters. It is easy to memorize because it can be read in as little as three minutes. Many people in Japan try to practice it as the first sutra they read.

The sutra I am going to introduce here is called “Juseige” Chant. It has 220 characters and is even shorter than the Heart Sutra. This sutra is commonly read in the Jodo Shinshu and Jodo Shu Buddhist sects.

As a Japanese Buddhist monk, I have read the Juseige.

What is the Juseige?

Juseige comes from the Sutra of Immeasurable Life. The Sutra of Immeasurable Life is known in Japan as “Muryoju-kyo”.

When Amitabha Buddha (Amida) was a Bodhisattva in training. He listened to the teachings of his master Buddha and observed many Pure Land. After a very long time, he made a vow before his master to become a Buddha who would be better than any other Buddha’s Pure Land and save all people.

Juseige is the words of the Bodhisattva who made 48 desires for the salvation of all people, and who summarized these desires in three vows.
